'Kytalyk' is the Siberian crane. Yearly, the kytalyk migrates from the high north of Siberia to the south of China. The kytalyk is a national symbol in the east of Siberia.

This beautiful bird lives in an area where the effects of climate change are fully visible by the thawing of permafrost. This is one of the feedbacks that amplify climate change by its effect on the carbon cycle, by emission of methane and carbon dioxide.

Research on the carbon cycle is the central activity of Kytalyk Carbon Cycle Research. This is based on experience with research in permafrost areas and peatlands in Western Europe, Siberia and North America.
